After much speculation and my lack of posts the dreaded rumor became a reality.
25 years later and the last member of the Galacticos has officially left the club. Goal keeper Iker Casillas will begin a new chapter in a new team in a new league.
Casillas joined Porto, I along with many other Madridistas, believe Iker Casillas would end his soccer [football] career with the club that he has given so much to, Real Madrid. Unfortunately, that was not the case. With the arrival of Keylor Navas last summer it seemed there would be more competition as to who would be starter for specific matches, even though Casillas led a good majority whenever the team would fail in some way in big competitions, such as the Champions League in which they failed to qualify for the final, in the Spanish league in which they fell short and in the Copa Del Rey in which they also failed to qualified for the final some of the “fans” began turning against its own team.
Some of the names they would blame included Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Iker Casillas. With much scrutiny, rumors and at the same time deals the Spanish media blew up when they continuously reported Casillas was unhappy, or that he felt he didn’t have the support of the fans and also that he felt he was not an asset but rather a liability.
Before I delve myself deeper into Casillas leaving, we have to recognize a few things…such as whether or not you support or despise Real Madrid, one has to recognize the devotion and love Casillas has always had for Real Madrid. No matter what match it was, win or lose Casillas would always show his face to celebrate or to discuss where the club failed.
Players of his caliber are hard to find, many change clubs constantly, others just want more money and the loyalty is dead. But in the case of Casillas it is hard to ever call him a traitor or even insult his quality, honestly it would be absurd. I like many others do not agree with the transfer of Casillas to the Portuguese league, he belongs in Real Madrid and should’ve ended his career where he started it. At the same time you cannot stay somewhere where you don’t feel appreciated and to some extent are taken for granted.
Even though, there will be many reports stating the reasons why Casillas left the whites, the truth is we will only know bits and pieces, solely because no one but Casillas, his agent, the Real Madrid President and perhaps the board were probably the only ones present.
All I can say is best of luck to one of the greatest goal keepers Real Madrid has ever had. Let’s just hope the club can rebuild itself from the losses it suffered in competitions last season. Thank you for everything captain, may your new adventure bring you lots of joy and championships. You will always be a Blanco/Madridista.
