Fall is here, and for soccer fanatics, especially for Real Madrid fans that means so is La Liga and the Champions League. After a long summer break…Real Madrid is back to defend it’s UCL championship crown.
Let’s recall that Real Madrid crowned themselves UCL winners last season, which earned them their tenth European Cup after defeating current Spanish Champion, Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid got drawn into Group B which means their opponents are as follows…FC Basel, PFC Lundgorets and Liverpool FC.
First up for the Spanish club was FC Basel. Real Madrid had to prove why they won the Champions League trophy, considering the poor performances they have had in the last two Spanish League matches in which they were defeated. Many fans are still unhappy Angel Di Maria was sold to Manchester United as they considered him a central piece to the team. Others are still unhappy Xabi Alonso left to Bayern Munich and the majority blame the president, Florentino Perez.
But enough about the past, let’s recap this UCL match!
Heads up…we had a total of six goals…wait…what?
That’s right, Basel opened the scoreboard but with a goal that didn’t favor them…Suchy scored an auto goal that put the whites ahead. About 15 minutes before halftime Welshman Gareth Bale would score for Real, a minute later…Cristiano Ronaldo would give Real Madrid its third (or second if we are trying to be specific). Six minutes later, Colombian sensation…James Rodriguez would also score and give Real Madrid a four-nil lead. BUT before things could get any worst for Basel…Derlis Gonzalez would open the scoreboard and the score was now 4-1 going into halftime.
After intermission…Karim Benzema would deliver the cherry on top that would determine the match with a final score of 5-1.
Brutal night for Basel but a great outcome for the UCL Champs.
Shifting gears a little bit…since we are talking about Real Madrid going back to business…let’s move into La Liga or the Spanish League.
This past weekend…after two consecutive losses…Real Madrid was able to gain three points against Deportivo La Coruña in Riazor.
With an impressive 8-2 win…Real Madrid managed to come out on top victorious and silence many doubters.
The stars of the game for Real Madrid included Cristiano Ronaldo with a hat-trick, Gareth Bale with a double, Javier “El Chicharito” Hernandez with another double and James Rodriguez.
But Deportivo would not leave empty handed…as they were only able to net twice, Haris Medunjanin and Jose Toche would net the only goals of the night for the Galicians.
Although the impressive wins over Basel and Deportivo may silence many doubters…the truth is the new Real Madrid continues to have many pondering if they will be able to achieve what they have set out to do.
The transition of the new players has been a rough one even coach Carlo Ancelotti at one press conference said that this Real Madrid needs a little bit of more time to fully adapt itself; which to some extent we can all agree with.
Perhaps winning every game will not happen…BUT we can be sure that once this Real Madrid starts to produce positive results many Madridistas will rejoice and the memories of unhappy transfers and undesired players will be a distant recollection.
As for now let’s enjoy that we have fútbol back and that the seasons are long and full of surprises.
La Liga UPDATE: Real Madrid defeated Elche this past Tuesday with a final score of 5-1. Cristiano Ronaldo managed to net four while Gareth Bale netted one. The Ballon D’Or winner has scored seven goals in the past four days.
