It seems like it was just yesterday that the soccer season had ended, and in this case that Real Madrid finally acquired the coveted tenth European cup; a lot has happened in between first, Germany won the World Cup and Real Madrid acquired some new players. The U.S. tour had the outcome that not many expected, but all of that is in the past, and now it is time to think of the new season.
This season, Real Madrid will be fighting for the possibility of acquiring six titles! That’s right six! The first is the UEFA Supercup in which Real Madrid faced off against Sevilla. Let’s recall that Sevilla won the Europa League last season against Benfica.
This match was significant to both teams, firstly because if Sevilla managed to beat Real Madrid, then essentially they would’ve beaten the current best European team. Secondly, if Real Madrid won they would continue to claim supremacy. Thirdly, with new players arriving in Real Madrid, there are also doubts from the fans and the media about the interaction and the positions these new players will take, and if they will be benched or not. Winning this award would mean coach Carlo Ancelotti has modified his starting lineup for the best and that the decisions he makes about the starting lineup are in the club’s best interest.
With the arrival of new Costa Rican goal keeper Keylor Navas to Real Madrid there has been a lot of scrutiny towards Iker Casillas and Diego Lopez both who at the time were the current Real Madrid goalies. Diego Lopez has just signed with A.C. Milan to seek a better opportunity. Iker Casillas has been questioned countless times by reporters if he thinks he is in his worst career peak. The starting goalie for this match had already been decided by coach Carlo Ancelotti even before acquiring their newest goal keeper Keylor Navas.
So with so much on the line? Who crowned themselves UEFA Supercup Champions?
The starting lineup included some familiar faces but it also included the newest members of the team.
Both teams would start off pretty even but it wouldn’t be until the 30th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo would open the scoreboard from a brilliant pass by Gareth Bale. The score would now be one-nil. After halftime Cristiano Ronaldo would strike again making it two-nil, this time Karim Benzema would make the pass to CR7; an opportunity that the current Ballon D’Or winner, CR7 would not give up and secure the UEFA Supercup for his side. Sevilla’s goalkeeper Beto would deny Real Madrid any more chances of scoring and the marker would remain 2-0.
Real Madrid would crown themselves UEFA Supercup Champions. Cristiano Ronaldo netted the difference and was pretty much able to tell everyone “I’m Back!”
Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez both the newest additions to the team played fantastic and seemed the integration to the new team had come with ease.
Real Madrid managed to achieve the first title of the season, starting on the right foot, will they be able to capture the other five?
