One month later, 32 teams, and 64 matches later, the World Cup comes to a close.
The World Cup is indeed staying in Europe, as Germany crowned themselves World Cup Champions against an Argentine team that in the end failed to deliver.
No other team had been able to acquire the World Cup in the Americas, but Germany has now changed that.
Looking back at a bit of history, the last time Argentina won the World Cup was in 1986 with the help of legend Diego Maradona against Germany.
Four years later, Germany crowned themselves Champions against Argentina.
Many say this was Lionel Messi’s night to par out and perhaps level himself with the legend Diego Maradona and go down in history as one of the greatest footballers.
In the first half the only clear option would be that of Gonzalo Higuain but to the demise of Argentina, it was an offside and the goal was annulled. Other than that, both teams were leveled out, attempting to keep a clean sheet. The second half would also remain scoreless. At the 88th minute German coach Joachim Löw would substitute record breaker Miroslav Klose for Mario Gotze. This would mark the last time, Klose would ever play a World Cup wearing the Die Mannschaft jersey, as he is retiring. Goetze would come in and change the outcome of the game.
Going into Extra Time, both teams were tired and were preparing for a penalty shootout, should the score remain the same…but when the clock hit the 113th minute…Mario Gotze scored a fantastic volley from a cross by Andre Schurrle. The score was now one-nil favoring the German side. But Argentina would get one last attempt, a free-kick that Lionel Messi would step up to take, with so much on the line, “La Pulga” knew what was at stake but to the demise of many, he was not able to make anything of that chance, instead his kick went above the net.
At just 22 years old, Mario Gotze gave the German side the goal they had been looking for, and ended their quest for supremacy as they crowned themselves World Cup Champions.
And so…there is a new World Cup Champion, and Brazil has now ended its duties as hosts for the World Cup 2014, the waiting game for the next World Cup begins, but this time, the new host will be Russia.
Since we are still reeling that the World Cup is over, let’s take a look at Mario Gotze’s incredible goal.
