After a long quest, Real Madrid is just 90 minutes away from winning its 10th Champions League cup!
If you haven’t heard by now, Los Blancos eliminated current Bundesliga Champion and defending Champions League winner Bayern Munich!!
You heard right. Real Madrid is on its way to Lisbon!
Ever since the semi-final draw, there was so much speculation about this specific match. Would Real Madrid be able to tame Bayern Munich? Or would Bayern Munich advance to once again lift the Champions League trophy?
Both teams knew it was going to be a tough match, and both were not underestimating each other. In the end, there would only be one winner!
Let’s recall that Real Madrid won the first leg game with a minor difference of one goal. Playing the first leg at home favored Real Madrid, but with such a minor difference Bayern Munich knew it had a possibility of diminishing that deficit, as well as the advantage of playing at home!
BUT before getting to the recap and the goals of this match…let’s go back in time to the 2001-2002 Champions League final.
Real Madrid has been on the hunt for la decima for over 12 years! Los Blancos won their ninth champions league cup during the 2001-2002 season! When they had stars like Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, David Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Fabio Cannavaro and Raul, players that made up “Los Galacticos” (the galactics). A term that was seen in a positive and negative light.
When Real Madrid managed to win its novena (ninth) it had to match up against a very powerful German team, Bayer Leverkusen whom at the time had another legend, Michael Ballack. Real Madrid went on to win the final, with a score of 2-1 with goals from Raul and Zinedine Zidane. From then on, it has been a constant effort to try to win la decima or the tenth. The team had to go through various changes during the 12 years, from managers to players.
It might not have been easy, it took a lot longer than they expected it…but in the end Real Madrid has managed to acquire a ticket to the final by defeating one of the best European teams at the moment!
Los Blancos managed to knock out the third German team in their quest for la decima, first Schalke, then Borussia Dortmund and lastly Bayern Munich.
Sergio Ramos opened the scoreboard at the 16th minute that gave the Spanish team the lead of one-nil. Four minutes later…Ramos would strike again, adding to the goal advantage of the visiting side. Bayern would continue to press but were gullible to Madrid’s sharp counter attacks. Bayern’s aspirations to a second Champions League trophy were continuing to diminish. If they wanted to reach the final again, they needed to stop Madrid and keep them at bay. Easier said than done…current Ballon D’Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo would also find the net and score the third one for his team, bringing his goal count to 15 goals in a single Champions League season breaking the previous record…BUT that was before half-time.
After the interval… Bayern Munich knew it was not easy to diminish a deficit of four goals on aggregate. Bayern pressed a lot more in the second half, but most of their chances landed in the hands of Real Madrid Goal Keeper, Iker Casillas, attempts that did not create much danger. Real Madrid continued to do its part and defend; Bayern Munich attempted but could not define any clear shots. By the 90th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo would score again, bringing the score to four-nil, with an aggregate score of FIVE-nil! Cristiano Ronaldo also managed to set a new Champions League record of 16 goals in a single Champions league season! The player who a few weeks ago was injured and unable to play, but who managed to recuperate just in time for such important matches.
Real Madrid looked really good, both in a defending and in a counter attacking aspect. It is Carlo Ancelotti’s first season as Real Madrid’s coach; Cristiano Ronaldo is at a great moment in his career perhaps his best! The only negative aspect of this game is that Xabi Alonso will miss the final, because he is suspended.
This will be the 13th European Cup Final, the first one since claiming the ninth! Real Madrid had been eliminated in the semi-finals on three previous occasions.
Real Madrid will now await to see who will be its opponent, Chelsea or Atletico Madrid. Although Real Madrid has already acquired one trophy this season and they are on their way to perhaps acquiring their second…the treble may have to wait. Atletico de Madrid continues to be the Spanish League leader…and unless they slip up, it is more than likely they will win La Liga. If Atletico Madrid slips up and loses points then Real Madrid has a chance of acquiring La Liga…as for right now…Real Madrid is just focusing on their next match against Valencia.
UPDATE: REAL MADRID WILL FACE OFF AGAINST ATLETICO MADRID…IN A FINAL THAT WILL TAKE PLACE MAY 24. IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME TWO TEAMS FROM THE SAME CITY COMPETE IN A FINAL…IN THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. GET READY BECAUSE THIS IS A FINAL…YOU WILL NOT WANT TO MISS! 😀
