This season’s Champions League has been full of surprises! Many teams have surprised us, and many have proven that they are not underdogs.
That is the case of Atletico Madrid, the team that, although not at the bottom, was always overshadowed by Real Madrid and Barcelona, the biggest teams in Spain!
This year that is not the case. For starters, Atletico Madrid is at the top of the Spanish League table followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Atletico managed to advance to the semi-finals where, spoiler alert, it knocked off the last English team in the Champions League… Chelsea.
Diego Simeone’s men are on their way to an epic final! Both finalists will make history as this will be the first Champions League Championship match ever between teams from the same city.
Atletico will face off against a very hungry Real Madrid squad that is on the quest for “la decima.” As for Atletico Madrid, they’re fighting for its first-ever Champions League trophy.
This will be the first final in over 40 years that Atletico Madrid will participate in. The only question is who wants it more? The team that has been on the search for this trophy for over 12 years or the team that has not been in a Champions League final in over 40 years?
To reach the title game, Atletico needed to overcome Chelsea. After a scoreless first leg, both teams had an equal chance at advancing.
The game began a bit even as Chelsea attempted to keep its cool despite Atletico’s continued press.
It seemed everything was favoring Atletico at first but Jose Mourinho is not a coach that lets his team give up.
Chelsea eventually found the net first thanks to none other than former Atletico player Fernando Torres.
The local team was up one-nil. Atletico knew that if it wanted the ticket to the final, it only had to tie the game. If the score was kept tied, Atletico would advance on away goals.
Just before half-time, Atletico evened the score at 1-1!
After half-time, Samuel Eto’o fouled Diego Costa, who took the penalty and gave the lead to the visiting side to make the match 2-1.
Atletico gradually proved to be too much for Chelsea to handle.
With 20+ minutes left, Arda Turan to netted the third and final goal of the match, giving Atletico the 3-1 win.
Mourinho’s men could not make a comeback as Atletico dominated most of the second half.
Los Rojiblancos (the red-and-whites) have had an outstanding season and their efforts in both the Champions League and la liga have favored them. If everything continues as is, and Atletico maintains its winning streak, Los Rojiblancos will win La Liga and beat rival powers Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Can we consider Atletico’s journey a true Cinderella Story?
With a month left, Atletico will now focus on gaining more points in La Liga with Levante up next.
What about Chelsea?
Currently the Blues sit in second place in the Premier League after beating Premier League leader Liverpool.
Jose Mourinho congratulated the Spanish team after their match and stated that his team did everything they could, was the result fair? In his opinion it was not because they had more possession and created more chances. He went on to say that in the all Madrid final…if both teams were in the final its because they deserve to be there.
This weekend Chelsea will face off against Norwich City in its ongoing journey to gain the Premier League.
