After what seemed like a long wait…we would be awarded with a “clasico.” So what happens when Real Madrid and Barcelona, the two biggest rivals in Spain, come face to face in what seems to be one of the closest races for the league title?
Real Madrid would go into the match with an advantage of four points. Barcelona on the other hand would need to win this match if they wanted to cut their deficit of points with Real Madrid and continue being a contender for the Spanish League title.
If you have not heard by now…it is being called one of the most controversial clasico matches!
So what happened?
Barcelona would fly to Spain and play in the Santiago Bernabeu. The match would begin by favoring Barcelona. Lionel Messi would assist Andres Iniesta and the Catalans would be up 1-0. Karim Benzema would receive a cross from Angel DiMaria and the Blancos would be back in the game. The match would now be tied. But that would not remain for long, as Benzema would put the Blancos up one. The score would now be 2-1. Close to half-time Lionel Messi would make the match a tie (2-2) that would send both teams back to the locker rooms with really no advantage.
After half-time, the match would turn a bit feistier.
Real Madrid would be awarded a penalty at the 54th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo would step up to the plate and put the Merengues up one. Ten-minutes later, the Catalans would now receive a penalty in which Lionel Messi would put his side up and the match once again would be a TIE, this time the score would be 3-3. So who would score next? Would Madrid be able to bring their leadership to seven-points or would Barcelona cut the deficit to one-point and be once again a reckoning force to acquire the title? The game would turn in favor to the visiting side, as Barcelona would once again receive a penalty, close to the end of the match. Lionel Messi would step up again, and the Catalans would lead the match 4-3.
But why exactly was this match controversial? Well for starters, there were seven yellow cards distributed, and one red card.
The first penalty was a cause of a clip by Dani Alves to Cristiano Ronaldo, which many believe Ronaldo exaggerated. Whether he did or did not can be up for discussion. The second penalty would favor Barcelona, as this time it would be Sergio Ramos who would clip Neymar inside the area. Previously, Ramos would demand the referee to give Dani Alves a RED card for his attack on Cristiano…but the referee did just the opposite. Real Madrid would lose a valuable player, Sergio Ramos and be down one. The RED card issued was questionable since the contact of Ramos on Neymar was quite minimal. Carlo Ancelotti would be forced to switch up his line-up after losing a key player, he would need to cede Benzema and brought Raphael Varane in. The third penalty would come out of nowhere, as Andres Iniesta tried to sneak between Daniel Carvajal and Xabi Alonso but tumbled. The referee rushed over and awarded Barcelona another penalty which Lionel Messi would gladly take.
So what’s next for both teams?
Barcelona will face Celta Vigo in their quest for the Spanish League Title at the Camp Nou. As for Real Madrid, they will face Sevilla but this time they will be the visiting team, in their attempt to acquire the Spanish Title as well.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the quest for the Spanish League has gotten even closer, as the top three teams are in contiguous positions of each other, and any mistake can cost them the ability to remain in the chase for the ultimate prize…the Spanish League title!
