The first part of the second leg of the Champions League was a bit predictable, but nonetheless very interesting. This week it would be the second part to the second leg of the Champions League, where some of the results were already determining who was moving on to the quarterfinals. So who made it to the final eight? Here’s a recap!
This past Tuesday Real Madrid would return to the Santiago Bernabeu to face Schalke 04. After winning the first leg six to one, it was more than likely that Madrid had secured their spot in the quarterfinals. This match would be just as thrilling as the first one. After a scoreless 20 minutes in the first half the Merengues managed to net one. The goal would be provided by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo assisted by Gareth Bale. Ten minutes later, the German side, Schalke would find the net and score. It was a tied game by halftime. By the 73rd minute, it would be the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo to net another for the Spanish side and essentially give his team the lead once again. A minute after, it would be Alvaro Morata who would give his team a complete advantage. The game would end three to one, with an aggregate score of nine to two, favoring the Merengues. This game was essential to Real Madrid for various reasons, they are currently the leaders in the Spanish league with a four point advantage over huge rival… Barcelona, whom they will play this upcoming Sunday. Real Madrid are in the search for the tenth Champions League trophy and performing well in every game is important. The Spanish team has also expressed their desire to acquire the treble this season, the Champions League, the Spanish League and the Copa del Rey. Although it was a great game for Madrid, they did lose another player to an injury, young sensation Jese Rodriguez would suffer from a torn ACL and will be out for at least six months. On another note, Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal shy from reaching Lionel Messi’s previous record of 14 goals in a single edition of the Champions League. There is only one question left to ask ourselves, can Real Madrid keep this momentum and acquire the treble?
The following match would be one that many fans were looking forward to. Chelsea would face Galatasaray. Didier Drogba would return to Stamford Bridge but as a rival to the Blues. The first leg of this match ended as a tie which really gave no advantage to either side. Samuel Eto’o would open the scoreboard for the Blues and give them an early lead by the third minute. Close to halftime, the blues would find the net again, this time it would be Gary Cahill who would let Chelsea have an edge over their Turkish rivals. After halftime the game would remain scoreless and the Blues would win this match two-nil, with an aggregate score of three to one. Let’s recall that it wasn’t that long ago that Chelsea won the Champions League with Didier Drogba’s help, and about a year ago that they were able to win the Europa League. Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea is still the leader of the Barclays Premier League, it seems the Blues are playing fantastic football. Next up, Chelsea will face Arsenal in the BPL, this should be an intriguing match, seeing as Chelsea is the leader of the BPL and Arsenal is currently in third place.
On Wednesday, Manchester United would attempt to maintain their hopes of the Champions League alive, seeing as they lost their first leg match against Olympiacos, two-nil. Would Manchester United be up to the challenge?
The English side would open the scoreboard on the 24th minute, a penalty goal by Robin Van Persie. RVP would have a stellar performance, netting the goal once more at the 45th minute and again at the 50th minute. Close to the end of the game, the man of the match, RVP would be carried out in a stretcher with a perceived leg injury. Manchester United would qualify to the quarterfinals with a final score of three-nil, and an aggregate score of three to two. Man U would be able to bring hopes to their fans with a hat trick from Robin Van Persie, with a season of ups and downs, it is good to see Manchester United once again acquiring some victories. The Red Devils are currently in seventh place in the Barclays Premier League, one can only question, how far will they get in the Champions League?
The last team to qualify to the quarterfinals would be…Borussia Dortmund.
After having won their first leg match, four to two against Zenit St. Petersburg the Germans were coming into this game with a slight advantage. But would Zenit St. Petersburg manage to overturn the deficit? Zenit St. Petersburg would open the marker at the 16th minute with a goal by Brazilian sensation, Hulk. Close to half time, Borussia Dortmund would be able to net one, Sebastian Kehl would do the Germans the favor. Near the end of the game, Zenit St. Petersburg would strike again and net another, Jose Rondon would put the Russian team ahead. The game would end favoring the Russian team, two to one, but despite the German team’s loss, on an aggregate score of five to four, it would be Borussia Dortmund who would qualify to the quarter finals. Borussia Dortmund currently sit at second place in the Bundesliga, but they do not trail Bayern Munich closely. Will Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions league finals again like they did a year ago?
The Champions League draw for the next round will be this upcoming Friday, it should be interesting to see the quarterfinal match ups. The teams in the draw will be Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG, Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
UPDATE: The quarterfinal matches have been selected. So who will face who?
Barcelona – Atletico Madrid
Real Madrid – Borussia Dortmund
Bayern Munich – Manchester United
Chelsea – Paris Saint-Germain
