The Champions League is back with the Second-Leg of Round Sixteen for some teams. So who is going to the next round, and who isn’t? Let’s find out!
Starting off with Tuesday’s games, four teams, and only two winners. Bayern Munich would come into the second-leg with an advantage over
Arsenal. After having won the first-leg two-nil, the former treble champion would only need a tie to advance to the next round. Bastian Schweinsteiger would open the marker for the Germans at the 53rd minute that would lead the Gunners one-nil with an aggregate score of three-nil…but the Gunners would not leave this game scoreless. Lukas Podolski would score the goal of “dignity” at the 56th minute. The game would end in a tie, but Bayern Munich would be the winner with an aggregate score of three to one. The Germans would advance to the next round and although Arsenal was a high contender their chances became slim after losing the first leg. Although Arsenal did not advance to the next round they not only lost the ability but they also lost a crucial player in their squad. Mesut Ozil would become the latest injured player for the Gunners squad. After losing Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey all because of injuries…they now have to add Mesut Ozil. Having begun the season really well, one can question what is going to happen to the Gunners given the fact that they are in third place in the Barclays Premier League. As for Bayern Munich, they continue achieving success and leading the Bundesliga…one can actually picture Bayern Munich being a finalist in the Champions league once again, perhaps it may be too soon to ask, but can they achieve the treble again?
The other match of the day included Atletico Madrid facing AC Milan. Let’s recall that Atletico Madrid won the first leg one-nil. Coming into this match with a slight advantage turned out well for Atletico, although they fell to second place in La Liga their quest in the Champions League continues to the quarterfinals, this had not been achieved since 1997! Atletico would open the scoreboard at the third minute, for the Italian side, Kaka would open the scoreboard and score the only goal for
AC Milan. Close to halftime, the Spanish side would leave with an advantage of two-nil. From that point, it was only good news for the Spanish side as they managed to net two more and end the game with an aggregate score of five to one. Atletico Madrid may not be the leader in the Spanish League, but they have a high chance of obtaining that trophy if Real Madrid and Barcelona slip.
As for the following matches, on Wednesday Paris Saint-Germain would once again face Bayer Leverkusen. PSG had the clear advantage of having routed
Bayer Leverkusen four-nil in the previous game. If Bayer Leverkusen wanted to keep their Champions League hopes alive they would have to dominate PSG. During the second-leg Bayer Leverkusen would open the scoreboard and lead PSG…a few minutes later PSG would tie the game. After halftime it would be PSG who would find the goal area and net another, crushing the hopes of Bayer Leverkusen even more. The game would end two to one but PSG would advance with a six to one aggregate score. PSG seems to be doing just fine seeing as they are leaders in the French Ligue 1 and their quest for the Champions league continues.
Next up, Barcelona would attempt to finish the job and demolish the hopes of Manchester City in the Champions League. The Spanish side would come into this match with an upper hand of winning the first leg match two-nil. If the English side had any hopes of moving to the next round they would have to have the mind set and the desire to score against a fierce Barcelona that after falling to third place in the Spanish league, could not jeopardize their chances in the Champions league. After a scoreless first half, Barcelona would net the first goal of the game during the 66th minute, by the one and only…Lionel Messi. Although the odds were against
Manchester City at this point they managed to score their only goal during the 88th minute, but it would be Barcelona who would once again be victorious. Dani Alves would score the last goal of the game at the 90th minute…this would seal a ticket for Barcelona to the quarterfinals. The Spanish side would win with an aggregate score of four to one. The final score would end the hopes of Man City whom after losing out in the FA cup against Wigan and now losing out on the Champions league…the question now is, will Man City catch up to Chelsea in the Premier League and end the season on a good note?
Coming up in the Champions League… Spanish league leaders Real Madrid will face Schalke 04, Manchester United will face Olympiacos, Borussia Dortmund will encounter Zenit St. Petersburg again and Barclays Premier League leader, Chelsea will clash against Turkey’s Galatasaray.
