Yes you heard right,
Lionel Messi was dethroned and there is a new “king”… for now. Portuguese football captain and Real Madrid winger, Cristiano Ronaldo has won the coveted Ballon D’Or for the year 2013! It was very emotional and very touching, it showed a much more humble side of Cristiano that many had never seen before. Must I say, I think it was a well deserved award on an individual level, since he had spectacular performances, in la liga and especially in the World Cup Qualification games against Sweden, where it can be said he carried his country and earned a World Cup berth. But that is not to diminish the accomplishments of the other Ballon D’Or contenders.
Starting with Lionel Messi who perhaps could have won a fifth Ballon D’Or if he had not been absent for two months with an injury. He also had a great year with Barcelona and Argentina and was a worthy opponent. Lastly, we have Franck Ribery who had an impressive year in the Bundesliga, helping his team acquire the Treble the same year; with the French football team he did not appear as much which is perhaps the only reason he did not win the ballon, since it is based in individual performances and Ribery although he won every trophy he could with Bayern Munich, it was a team effort. I am not trying to diminish his quality of a player because he is one of the current best. But in an honest perspective Cristiano and Messi had a better individual record. And so a new king is crowned and given bragging rights to consider himself the best (for a year at least). Let’s face it we all think Cristiano and Messi are the best footballers currently no matter how much debate is made, the truth is both are spectacular! Another remarkable aspect of this ceremony was that Pelé was given a Ballon D’Or as well, since during his time as a professional footballer the award was only given to European players, it was an incredible spectacle to watch! Everybody knows Pelé is the best footballer to ever live! He was given an award he truly deserved, last but not least, the late Eusebio was honored by FIFA, and given the tribute he deserved, after all he accomplished a lot with the Portuguese national football team! It was one of the best ceremonies of Ballon D’Or in a while! Agree to disagree I am happy with the winner, feel free to disagree in the comments! Au Revoir mes amis!
